Be Responsible for Your Performance - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Be Responsible for Your Performance - Introvert Whisperer Be Responsible for Your Performance Performance management is a nerve-racking thing for both manager and employee. Itâs right up there is a trip to the dentist. Its not a highlight to your day and depending on the situation, can be painful. Since most of us are employees, even if weâre managers, Iâd like to outline a few things for you around your performance. Itâs YOUR performance so itâs your responsibility. Yes, performance management should be something that all managers do early and often but unfortunately they donât always. No matter what type of manager you have, you have to take responsibility for knowing what the performance expectations of you are and how you are doing to those expectations. Iâm shocked at how often I speak to people who donât know the answer to either of these questions. If you donât know â" ask! Which is worse: 1- finding out youâre missing expectations but have the time to turn it around? Or 2- getting fired because you failed to perform and the whole thing is a big surprise? You have to ask on an ongoing basis like every couple of months. Going an entire year is too long and could set you up to drive over the cliff. If they âhavenât thought about itâ, then you should. One reason why some managers donât establish expectations is that they havenât thought about it. Even so, that doesnât mean that they donât have them. If your manager would prefer to continue to be blissfully mindless and brushes it aside as âyouâre doing fineâ, donât let that be where the conversation ends. Youâve done the job so write down what you think you should be held accountable for. I know you may think this is doing their job, and it really kind of is, but you do yourself no favor by getting on your high horse on this. Write your thoughts down and review with the boss. Donât ignore the inputs. If your boss has indicated you need improvement, you need to take the input seriously. It takes a lot energy and effort to give feedback. No one is picking on you so donât try to rationalize why the performance feedback should be discredited. You may not agree with it and you may not think its fair but this is how your boss sees you and you have to take it seriously. Also, donât panic or over-correct. Both reactions wonât help you. There you go. I know its not the most comfortable subject in the world but I want you to succeed and doing these steps will help you tremendously. Go to top Let me emphasize that Self-Promotion doesnât have to be obnoxious to be effective. But, if you donât Self-Promote you, who will? Sexual Harassment Its Very Real - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Sexual Harassment Itâs Very Real - Introvert Whisperer Sexual Harassment: Itâs Very Real Iâm prompted to speak to you about a topic Iâve never written about before: Sexual harassment. I got into a fairly lengthy discussion with a 30+-year-old male friend yesterday. It started when discussing Matt Lauerâsâ (Today Show anchor) termination for âinappropriate sexual behavior in the workplaceâ. I appreciated his candor as he acknowledged that he really didnât know what any of this meant as he personally had never witnessed what he thought was sexual harassment. Like many people, he was left wondering if some woman was making it up or âmis-readingâ an interaction with a co-worker. This issue is very real and you donât have to go too far to find a woman who hasnât had to put up with it at least once in their life. I have had numerous âeventsâ of this nature throughout my career so I know itâs very real. Most of them were repulsive but one was bad enough Iâve barely ever told anyone. This behavior also occurs with men but less frequently. First, I would like to say that I do know that there are people who have made up false accusations and are poor at reading social interactions. Iâm sure that some of what youâve heard includes some of those people. But like every social problem we have, you canât disregard the problem because a few people have made false claims. What is sexual harassment? Just so weâre all on the same page, here is what the EEOC defines: It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that personâs sex. Harassment can include âsexual harassmentâ or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a personâs sex. For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general. Both victim and the harasser can be either a woman or a man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex. Although the law doesnât prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted). The harasser can be the victims supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer. This is also the type of thing that is hard to prove and as a result, most people donât do or say anything. Keep in mind that when this sort of thing happens with a boss or a person of power (think Bill Cosby or Matt Lauer) the recipient of the harassment often feels powerless to push back verbally much less ask for an intervention by a company or authorities for fear of the repercussions. Itâs the perfect crime if you think about it because the bad behavior essentially gets reinforced due to lack of punishment or accountability. This is the sort of thing that can cause you to hate your job, lose your personal power and reroute your life. Donât inflict this on others and donât accept it. If you are the recipient of sexual harassment, minimally you should speak up and let the offender know that itâs not ok to do or say the things they are doing. We teach people how to treat us and if you donât stand up for yourself you are reinforcing bad behavior, which means it will persist. There are full-blown classes on this so I wonât get into a full course of action but my main message is to think through what would you do if it happened to you. Respect others and respect yourself. How to Succeed on SAT Subject Tests
How to Succeed on SAT Subject Tests Learning to succeed on the SAT often means learning to succeedon the SAT Subject Tests, too, which can feel like a lot of extra pressure. Luckily, SAT Subject Tests are optional, which means students can prepare andsucceedby focusing on areas of their choosing. There are 20 different subject areas offering tests, and each is only one hour. Students might choose to take an SAT Subject Test to improve their academic portfolio, test out of some college courses, or stand out in scholarship competitions. If youre interested in taking one or more of these SAT Subject Tests, it will be important that you know how to approach them, improving your chances to succeed. 1. Choose your SAT Subject Testscarefully If you know that you struggle with a particular subject, it may not be a wise idea to take an SAT Subject Test in it (assuming it is not required by your college). If you dont have specific requirements for subject testing, choose exams that complement your course of study and show your expertise well. Topic SAT Subject Tests offered Mathematics Math Level 1, Math Level 2 Science Biology E/M, Chemistry, Physics English Literature History U.S. History, World History Languages Spanish, Spanish with Listening, French, French with Listening, Chinese with Listening, Italian, German, German with Listening, Modern Hebrew, Latin, Japanese with Listening, Korean with Listening Above data comes from the College Board website. Avoid those that are irrelevant to your study or that will otherwise show a lack of preparedness. [RELATED:Should I Take SAT Subject Tests?] 2. Think about your SAT Subject Test timeline While SAT Subject Tests are available to you many months of the year, youll want to put a little more thought into your timeline, rather than just assuming you can conveniently take the exams whenever you wish. Allow yourself enough time to retake the subject tests if necessary, but also try to schedule them late enough into your accompanying studies that you are fully prepared. If possible, take the test when youre near the end of a corresponding class. 3. Practice makes perfect on SAT Subject Tests Of course, no exam prep is complete without a number of practice tests. This is true for the SAT Subject Tests as well. While your high school classwork will act as great preparation for the subject tests, theyre not the only things you need to do. Work with the specific subject test, making sure the practice exams you choose are from the current version of the test. At the end, go through the results carefully, which will give you a better understanding of the test and your learning process. Narrow down where specifically you struggle and then focus your attention and following SAT Subject practice tests there. 4. Work smarter, not harder While there are a number of different SAT Subject Tests, they all follow similar scoring systems. Each correct answer earns the test-taker one full point, while incorrect answers subtract a partial point. If youre struggling to come up with an answer, feel free to skip a question, making a note that youll need to later return to it. For questions you simply dont know, try to work backwards, eliminating possible answer choices until you come up with a reasonable decision. 5. Look into SAT Subject Testrequirements Every SAT Subject Test requires a different set of supplies, so make sure you look into each ones details so youre familiar with the equipment required, as well as the format. Some tests require headphones and a CD player while others might require nothing. Knowing what you need will be crucial to your success on the SAT Subject Test of your choosing, so dont come unprepared. 6. Create a great study space Having a great spot to study can really help your prep process. Create a space that is conducive to your learning style and well stocked with the appropriate study materials, which might include the following: headphones a graphing calculator highlighters extra pens and pencils notebooks Knowing that youve got an effective place to learn can help motivate you to put in the hours of study youll need to ace your SAT Subject Test(s)! Our Top 3 Methods for Learning the Piano
Our Top 3 Methods for Learning the Piano Out of hundreds of methods to learn to play piano, which is the right one for you? ChaptersThe traditional methodThe simplified methodSpecialized methodsThere are countless methods for learning how to play the piano. And so many questions to ask: piano or keyboard? Private piano course or music school? piano lessons online or conservatory? Piano teacher or self teaching? Music theory or improvisation? Major scale or minor scale? On the Internet alone youâll find hundreds or methods, each professing to be the long-awaited, miracle solution for learning to play piano in 10 days, or something like that! This article attempts to help you sort through the mass of piano instruction methods, and narrows them down to three categories, each one responding to a particular aim. Afterwards, youâll be one step closer to playing that keyboard like Mozart!Which piano method will you choose?if you want to learn piano simply to play your favorite tunes, there are more simplified methods for learning to play piano in less time. These are mainly methods that can be mined from the in ternet, full of online piano courses and piano tutorials. You yourself have most probably even seen those videos on YouTube or Dailymotion featuring a piano player promoting his or her method to learn to play the piano in 24 hours. These videos resemble those rather dubious ones that promise you thousands of dollars each month simply by working from home. You are right to be skeptical of these âmiraculousâ methods (be especially wary of those labeled âfree piano coursesâ) that are coated in exaggerated marketing promises. However, there might be some truth in these miracle piano instruction methods: it can be possible to learn to play piano tunes through intuitive means rather quickly without learning solfege. The underlying principle consists in imitating another person who is playing. While itâs impossible to learn complex piano pieces this way, youâll be able to play piano music with struck chords, or simplified versions of a score, for instance (i.e. Mary Had a Little Lamb and Ode to Joy). This method is efficient but does require a high level of concentration and a strong memory.Don't fall for those videos that say even cats can learn to play piano!Learn improvisation on the pianoThere are other âmiracleâ methods for learning how to play the pianos in several days. Although obviously exaggerated, is it possible? Music is composed of chords and chord progressions: they follow one another according to a certain logic that most people could learn. This even applies to improvisation! In a given piano scale (the scale of D major for example), each note and each chord constructed on this note has a precise function. For instance, in C major, the C chord has a tonic function (the first scale degree of a diatonic scale). The note G is the dominant degree of C major (a dominant seventh chord). Then there is the subdominant chord, the fourth tonal degree of the diatonic scale: in C major, itâs the F chord. These three chords: tonic, dominant and subd ominant will allow you to improvise music pieces with little difficulty! The idea is to play a sequence of three chords with the left hand and improvise melodies with the right hand, in using all the notes of the scale. Gradually, youâll learn new scales to diversify your piano chords and achieve modulations. There are no right or wrong methods, it all depends on your end goal!If you want to learn to play piano seriously, to deeply understand music, play complex pieces (classical and otherwise), and perhaps become a professional musician, youâll quickly find this simplified method too limiting. Are you aiming to be a piano virtuoso? This method is advantageous only if your objectives are modest. However, methods are not always contradicting. You can just as well work using simplified and intuitive methods while learning solfege on the side (with a piano instructor from Superprof for instance).Specialized methodsAs we all know, there are many music genres! On the piano, you can learn to play all of them, from classical music to jazz, blues, variety and more.Whether you study classical music, variety or jazz improvisation, you will be using the same notes, the same chords, and most of the same rules, etc. So itâs relatively possible to go from one style to the next, and to learn piano tunes in several different music genres.Despite this, we recommend choosing one training method for the piano that corresponds to your musical aspirations. In jazz for example, the system of decoding chords uses an American system. But more to the point, jazz is an art of improvisation. And one wonât necessarily learn to improvise while studying classical music. Jazz piano training calls for a specific pedagogical instruction, a training method based on improvisation, and a harmony-driven understanding of music. Some classical musicians have very little knowledge of tonality, while itâs pretty much inconceivable to learn jazz without working on harmony. Classical music has it s own specific learning techniques, of course. Is jazz piano your thing, Ã la McCoy Tyner?Your chosen method of learning how to play piano will depend on your aims and the type of music youâd like to learn to play. Your chosen music style will also dictate the difficulty level of instruction.Learning to play variety music tunes is simpler than learning a classical music score by Shubert or Brahms, because of the focus on plucked chord progressions played by the left hand, for instance. This is a bit of a stereotype, of course: some pieces of classical music are easy to play, and certain variety songs quite complex. There are methods for every style: traditional methods for classical music jazz methods and variety music methods, etc. You can learn all the musical style you desire by working at home and teaching yourself. But they share one major similarity: each method requires motivation in order to learn to play piano. You can play whatever your wish with motivation! But to retain your motivation and overcome challenges that youâll meet along the way, working with a private music instructor in a piano lesson is your best option. And you wonât regret it! The advantages of piano playing are numerous (in terms of concentration, memory, relaxation, to name but a few). So what are you doing here, your baby grand is waiting!

As the video for this English listening exercises mentions, there are a lot of techniques for detecting if someone is lying. The video says that way people use language when they lie is one good indicator. It gives several real sentences spoken by famous people to give examples of this. To me the most fascinating was the difference between Lance Armstrong lying and telling the truth.
